About laparoscopy

Laparoscopy is a minimally invasive (keyhole) procedure in which a thin telescope with a camera (a laparoscope) is passed through a small cut near the navel to view the pelvic and abdominal organs. Fine instruments can be passed through one or two more small cuts to treat certain conditions.

In fertility care, laparoscopy may be used to check the fallopian tubes and to diagnose or treat conditions affecting the uterus, tubes and ovaries. At Skanda Fertility & Women's Health Centre, Thanjavur, laparoscopy is considered based on your symptoms, scan findings and fertility history.

What laparoscopy may evaluate or treat

Laparoscopy may be considered for selected conditions such as:

  • Endometriosis
  • Ovarian cysts, including endometriomas
  • Pelvic adhesions
  • Blocked or swollen fallopian tubes
  • Fibroids, in selected cases
  • Ectopic pregnancy
  • Long-standing pelvic pain
  • Checking whether the tubes are open with a dye test

The most appropriate procedure depends on your symptoms, diagnosis and plans for pregnancy.

What to expect

A laparoscopy generally involves:

  1. Consultation, scans and tests before surgery

  2. General anaesthesia

  3. Small cuts, usually one near the navel and one or two lower down

  4. Gently filling the abdomen with gas for a clear view

  5. Examination and treatment of findings as planned

  6. A dye test of the fallopian tubes where needed

  7. Recovery and discharge, often the same or the next day

  8. Follow-up to discuss the findings and next steps

Recovery time depends on what was done during the procedure.

Laparoscopy and fertility

Conditions such as endometriosis, adhesions or tubal disease can affect fertility. Laparoscopy can help confirm the cause and, in some cases, treat it in the same procedure.

The decision to operate depends on your age, symptoms, findings and future pregnancy plans. Surgery may not be necessary in every situation.

How is laparoscopy different from open surgery?

Laparoscopy uses a few small cuts instead of one large one, which usually means less pain, smaller scars and a quicker recovery than open surgery.

Will I need to stay in hospital?

Many women go home the same day or the next day, depending on the procedure. You will be told what to expect for your operation.

Why do some people get shoulder pain afterwards?

The gas used during surgery can irritate nerves and cause shoulder-tip pain for a day or two. This is common and usually settles on its own.

When can I try to conceive after laparoscopy?

This depends on what was done during the procedure. Your specialist will advise you when it is appropriate to try, or when to begin further treatment.
