Ovulation induction
Medication to help the ovaries develop and release an egg, with scans to follow the response. Often a first step when irregular ovulation, such as with PCOD, is the main cause.

About ovulation induction
Ovulation induction is a treatment that uses medication to stimulate the ovaries to develop and release an egg in women who ovulate irregularly or not at all. The aim is usually the growth of one or two mature follicles, timed so that conception can take place naturally or with IUI.
At Skanda Fertility & Women's Health Centre, Thanjavur, ovulation induction is planned after an evaluation of your cycle, hormone results and ultrasound findings, together with your partner's semen analysis.
How a treatment cycle usually works
A typical cycle may include:
Evaluation of ovulation, hormones and the pelvis
Tablets or injections from the early days of the cycle
Ultrasound scans to follow the growth of the follicles
A trigger injection when a follicle is mature, if needed
Timed intercourse or IUI around ovulation
Support for the second half of the cycle, where advised
A pregnancy test about two weeks later
The medicine, dose and number of scans are adjusted to your response. Monitoring helps reduce the risk of over-response and multiple pregnancy.
Who may consider ovulation induction?
Ovulation induction may be considered in situations such as:
- Irregular or absent ovulation
- PCOD
- Some hormonal conditions affecting ovulation, once treated
- Unexplained infertility, in selected cases
- As part of IUI treatment
Open fallopian tubes and a satisfactory semen analysis are usually confirmed first, as ovulation induction alone does not help when these are the cause.

Monitoring and safety
Fertility medicines can sometimes make more than one follicle grow. Ultrasound monitoring lets the team adjust the dose and, in some cycles, advise against trying if too many follicles develop, to reduce the risk of multiple pregnancy and ovarian hyperstimulation.
If ovulation induction does not lead to pregnancy after a few cycles, the plan is reviewed and other options such as IUI or IVF may be discussed.

Questions about ovulation induction
Mon – Sat: 8:30 am – 5:00 pm · Sunday: by prior appointment only · Please contact us in advance to schedule your appointment.
Call +91 73589 75682Is ovulation induction the same as IVF?
No. In ovulation induction the egg is released and fertilised inside the body, through intercourse or IUI. In IVF, eggs are collected and fertilised in the laboratory.
Are the medicines tablets or injections?
Both are used. Tablets are often tried first; injections may be used when tablets have not worked or for specific reasons. The choice depends on your assessment.
How many cycles can I try?
This depends on your age, your response and other fertility factors. The plan is usually reviewed after a few cycles rather than continued indefinitely.
Does it increase the chance of twins?
Fertility medicines can increase the chance of more than one egg being released, and so of twins. Monitoring scans help to reduce this risk.
