About hysteroscopy
Hysteroscopy is a procedure in which a thin telescope with a camera (a hysteroscope) is passed through the vagina and cervix to examine the inside of the uterus. No cuts are made on the abdomen.
A diagnostic hysteroscopy looks at the uterine cavity and the openings of the fallopian tubes. An operative hysteroscopy uses fine instruments passed through the hysteroscope to treat certain conditions found inside the uterus. At Skanda Fertility & Women's Health Centre, Thanjavur, hysteroscopy is advised based on your symptoms, scan findings and fertility history.
What hysteroscopy may evaluate or treat
Hysteroscopy may be considered for selected conditions such as:
- Endometrial polyps
- Fibroids that bulge into the uterine cavity
- Uterine septum or other structural differences
- Adhesions inside the uterus
- Abnormal uterine bleeding
- Recurrent miscarriage or unsuccessful IVF, in selected cases
- A misplaced intrauterine device (IUD)
A detailed evaluation is required before recommending any procedure.
What to expect
A hysteroscopy generally involves:
Consultation and an ultrasound scan
Scheduling, usually after your period and before ovulation
Anaesthesia or pain relief as planned for your procedure
Passing the hysteroscope gently through the cervix
Gently filling the uterus with fluid for a clear view
Treatment of findings where planned
A short rest, then home the same day in most cases
Recovery depends on whether the procedure is diagnostic or operative.

Hysteroscopy and fertility
Conditions inside the uterus, such as polyps, fibroids or adhesions, can affect implantation. Finding and treating them may be part of preparing for natural conception, IUI or IVF.
Surgery is not needed in every situation. The decision depends on your symptoms, findings and future pregnancy plans.

A diagnostic hysteroscopy is usually short and may cause cramping similar to period pain. Operative hysteroscopy is usually done under anaesthesia. Your team will explain the plan for you.
Will there be any cuts or stitches?
No. The hysteroscope passes through the vagina and cervix, so there are no cuts on the abdomen.
When in my cycle is hysteroscopy done?
It is usually planned after your period has finished and before ovulation, when the lining of the uterus is thin and the view is clearer.
How soon can I return to normal activities?
Most women return to normal activities within a day or two. Light spotting or cramping for a few days can be normal. You will be given specific advice after your procedure.
